Are You Covered?
Coverage of Fees by Extended Health Care Plans
The BC Medical Services Plan does not cover therapy fees, but many extended health plans do. While most insurance providers include counselors from various professions, some may only cover registered social workers or psychologists.
For extended health insurance, you will need to pay for your session upfront and then submit your receipt for reimbursement. Please check with your employer or insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage details.
Establishing Pre-Approval
When contacting your extended medical provider, consider asking the following questions:
-
Coverage for Counsellors: Does your plan cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) or Master Therapeutic Counsellors (MTC)? I hold both designations.
-
Total Coverage Amount: How much am I covered for in total, and what is the coverage per session?
-
Deductibles: Is there a deductible I need to meet?
-
Coverage Period: Is the coverage based on a calendar year or by fiscal year?

The first step of empowerment is choice and choosing
how you deal with trauma puts the control back with you.
Safe Harbour Counselling is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, which comprises seven member communities: Okanagan Indian Band, Osoyoos Indian Band, Penticton Indian Band, Upper Nicola Band, Upper and Lower Similkameen Indian Bands, and Westbank First Nation, as well as the Colville Confederated Tribes in Northern Washington State. Sarah honours their deep connection to this land and pays her respects to their elders, past and present.
As a second-generation settler with ancestors from England and Ireland, Sarah recognizes that England was a colonial power that contributed to the foundation of Canada through the genocide of Indigenous peoples. Sarah is committed to continuously unlearning the colonial principles she has inherited. Sarah acknowledges her unearned privileges as a white settler, cisgender, heterosexual, non-disabled, neurotypical, financially stable, educated, and female individual.
